Implant dentistry is a relatively new dental discipline, established in the 1960s with Prof. Brånemark’s discovery of titanium's ability to integrate with the bone. After the experimental phase, a Swedish company, Nobelpharma, changed the clinical approach to the replacement of lost teeth. During 1990s the company grew to Nobel Biocare, the most influential implant system among some 300 in the world. Apart from rehabilitating without removable dentures and grinding the remaining teeth, implants have revolutionized the traditional dental discipline of periodontology. Today's technical possibilities and an adequate approach, one can claim that implantoprosthetic solutions are currently more predictable than bridges and crowns on natural teeth. Implant failure is rare, so patients that receive regular prophylactic treatment can be assured of lifetime guarantee.
